The Forty-spotted Pardalote is a dull olive-green above and greyish-white below. The face is yellowish and the rump is also olive-green with no red. Wings are dark with dull white spots.

Body green-grey with a yellow throat. Top of head black with white streaks. White stripe above the eye; yellow spot in front of the eye. Wings black with a white edge and a red or yellow spot. Body up to 12 cm long.
