Description The Red-bellied Short-necked Turtle has a reddish or pinkish underside to the shell. The carapace is variable in colour and can be brown, tan, grey or almost black. Juveniles have reddish edge to the carapace which fades as they mature. The upper jaw is pale yellowish. Subspecies include Emydura subglobosa worrelli (Diamond head turtle). and Emydura subglobosa angkibaanya (Jardine River turtle) from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland.

Size up to 25 cm, females are larger than males
Habitat rivers, lakes, lagoons
Food insects, molluscs, small fish, and some plant matter
Breeding The female lays a clutch of eggs in a nest on the bank above the water.
Range far north on Northern Territory and Cape York Peninsula, Queensland. Also found in Papua New Guinea.
