  Paradise Riflebird (Ptiloris paradiseus)

PARADISE RIFLEBIRD FACTS

Description
The male Paradise Riflebird has shiny black plumage with iridescent green marking on top of head and upper breast. The tail is short with iridescent blue-green central tail feathers. The beak is long and curved. The female is grey-brown above with buff coloured underside.

24-28cm

Habitat
subtropical and temperate rainforests

Food
insects, spiders and other invertebrates. Uses long curved bill to pull off tree bark and dig into rotten wood for insects. Also eats fruit.

nest is a bulky, rough bowl of twigs, leaves, decorated with moss, built high in tree

Range
Great Dividing Range from central-eastern New South Wales to the Bunya Mountains of south-eastern Queensland. There is also an isolated population in north Queensland.
